On January 17, 2023. ERASMUS+ Sport project ORIENT – "Young explorers re-discover local communities through orienteering", co-financed by the European Commission and Municipality Centre Sarajevo, was promoted by Sarajevo Meeting of Cultures to school directors and physical education teachers and professors at the premises of the Municipality Center Sarajevo, gathering over 25 participants. The event began with a brief overview of the ORIENT project by the president of Sarajevo Meeting of Cultures, Prof. dr. Dino Mujkić, followed by a speech from the Major of Municipality Center, Mr. Srđan Mandić.I am so glad that the community has recognized this project, because this is a way to introduce something new to our community and schools. The curriculum developed over the past year could be a great refreshment in sports classes to our youth. Likewise, by creating the orienteering map for the competition organised in November 2022, we managed to connect sports and culture. The young people who participated in the ORIENT workshops and trainings, together with the youth from the Association Oaza, visited all important cultural and historical sites and with that, mastered the basics of orienteering.

This project also had an inclusive character“, said dr. Dino Mujkić. ”We have introduced a good practice for all our projects supported through public calls to be publicly presented, thus completing the whole story and being fully transparent. All projects dealing with youth education, sports and inclusion are very important for our society and are welcome in the Municipality Centre.

Our mission in the Municipality Centre is to be a Municipality for young people, especially at these times when more and more youth, regrettably, are leaving our country. Our task is to provide them with the best possible conditions to stay here”, said Mayor Mandić.

Orienteering can play a crucial role in the process of community building. Through the practice of orienteering, people can have a more in-depth knowledge of their local reality and look at their environment under a new light. To harness the potential of orienteering, the ORIENT consortium has published the curriculum, designed to be a learning tool for sport trainers and CSOs workers to integrate orienteering into their practices with young people.
